I forget where I first head about Taguchi methods. Wikipedia does a good job at explaining it. Or least it did today :)

Taguchi methods are statistical methods developed by Genichi Taguchi to improve the quality of manufactured goods and, more recently, to biotechnology, marketing and advertising. Taguchi methods are considered controversial among some traditional Western statisticians but others accept many of his concepts as being useful additions to the body of knowledge.

Also, and this can’t be said enough, knowing who your audience. Use a bigger font for the young and old, be aware of visitors who are color-blind, etc.

Here’s a good example of more effective communication and direct mail testing. Check out the response when the writing style of a letter was changed.

For example, by rewriting one letter, the Department of Revenue tripled the number of businesses paying the “use tax,” the widely ignored equivalent of sales tax on products purchased out of state. That meant an extra $800,000 collected over two years by the department, which had started its own plain talk initiative before the governor’s order.
